What is The Rights of Girls Initiative?
Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is a crime against humanity which is practised by 86 per cent of families in Africa. At least 150 million women and girls are affected by this cruel procedure which continues to be performed not just in Africa, but also in Asia, Europe, America and Australia.
Our Work
The Rights of Girls Initiative Ltd seeks to end this crime by raising public awareness, creating networks, encouraging donations, organising fundraising events and educational programs both in Australia and in affected Third World countries.
Our Strategy
We are raising funds which are sent overseas to Réseau de Développement et d’Appui aux Initiatives Communautaires (RDIC) in Africa. The funds are to buy a goat which will be given to a family that in return formally agrees not to mutilate their young daughters. We are looking to change the lives and health of young women, one goat, one girl at a time. Additionally, funds raised from private and corporate donations will assist with the task of educating parents and village leaders in Africa of the psychological, physical and medical dangers of this practice.
Our Funds
It is our goal to operate without the need for overheads or administration costs so that all funds donated go directly to helping the lives of young girls in Africa.
Our African Partner
We are working with the highly regarded organisation RDIC in Mali, (Network Development and Support Community Initiatives). This organisation has been operating since 2007 and has already funded the building of clinics and schools, and emergency aid in the form of food and water.
Our Aim
All activities are also to raise awareness on a national level of the existence of FGM of very young girls in Africa, in a bid to have the Australian Government take action to encourage this practice to be made illegal in Africa.
Our Constitution states our purpose is to
a) raise awareness on a national level of the existence of Female Genital Mutilations (FGM) of very young girls in Africa, in a bid to have the Australian Government take action to encourage this practice to be made illegal in Africa.
(b) raise funds from private and corporate donations that will assist with the task of educating parents and village leaders in Africa of the psychological, physical and medical dangers of this practice.
(c) hold fund raising events.
(d) work with Non Government Organisations in Africa by providing aid funds that will benefit the lives of young girls and their families.
(e) once an effective model is established launch this in more affected countries
